Optimist Girls Basketball – January 15 2017
Soroptimist 25, Banc Home Loans 20
Sofia Mostow and Ana Casey led the scoring for Soroptimist with eight points apiece. Their offensive effort couple with a 13 rebound effort on the defensive end from Montze Gloria proved too much for Banc Home Loans as Soroptimist held on for a five point victory Sunday. Natalie Mostow also added six points. Banc Home loans were led by Emma Bartel with ten points and Cady Jeriko with six. Madison Hulquist garnered eight boards and Jeriko picked up five as well.
Custom House 17, Kesler Connection 16
In a game that went down to the wire Custom House led by Ashley McDowell’s eight points prevailed over a hard driving Kesler Connection unit. Madison Polanjec added four points, Mikalyla McDowell three and Hope Greenlow two points for Custom House. Carla Magana led Kesler with six points. Teammates Amelia Leeman, Chloe Dinsdale, Noelani Gregor, Nena Connell and Juliette Moshetti each added two points to a well balanced team effort.
Soroptimist 30, McDonald’s 18
In a game separated by one point at the end of the third quarter, Soroptimist rode a 12 point fourth quarter surge to triumph. Sofia Mostow scored seven of her game high 13 points in the final period. Natalie Mostow added nine points on the day and Ana Casey six. Imani Oseso played a well rounded game leading McDonald’s in both points and rebounds with eight and nine respectively. Giana McDaniel scored seven points as well. Twyla Borck had five rebounds and four steals for a fine defensive showing.

Banc Home Loans 20, Annette’s Chocolates 18 (OT)
A more exciting game is not to be found anywhere. With her team trailing by two points with 19 seconds left in the game, Annette’s Kyli Cleveland calmly stepped to the line and drained two free throws to send the game into overtime. After an exchange of baskets Madison Hulquist took an out-of bounds pass and sank the winning layup as the final buzzer sounded to win the game for Banc Home Loans.
Emma Bartel led all Banc scorers with six points while Hulquist and Chantal Nava added four each. Cameron Wickersham and Amina Schnebelt rounded out the Banc scoring with three points apiece. Wickersham added nine steals on the day. Cleveland led Annette’s scoring with seven points. Ana Casey added four and teammates Sofia Mostow, Natalie Mostow, and Avery Keely adding two each. Keely had six steals on the day and Gloria six rebounds.
Custom House 27, McDonald’s 11
Custom House used a balanced scoring attack and tough defense to pull away from McDonald’s in the third quarter. Every Custom House player scored during the game. Madison Polanjec led the attack with 8 points, Jasmine Palmas added five and Savannah Snider four. Palmas also had seven boards on the day.
Imani Oseso paced McDonald’s with four points joined by Kalyn Loftus with three. They each had solid defensive games grabbing nine and five rebounds respectively. Giana McDaniel had six rebounds to go with her two points and Twyla Borck added two points as well.
Kesler Connection 17, Banc Home Loans 14
In yet another game that came down to the wire, Kesler Connection outlasted Banc Home Loans to garner the win. Carla Magana led all Kesler players with 13 points. Nena Connell added four points to go with her eight rebounds. Noelani Gregor and Amelia Leeman played solid defense pulling down ten and five rebounds.
Madison Hulquist led the Banc offense with six points with assistance from Caty Jeriko who added five. Zoey Taylor and Emma Bartel each added two points. Cameron Wikersham had five steals and Hulquist four.

Optimist Middle School Girls’ Basketball

The Optimist Youth Basketball Girls’ Middle School division kicked off their 2016-17 season with a bang this past Sunday at Napa Valley College. Sign ups are still being accepted; visit napaoyb.org to download a registration form or call Warren Stone at 226-8201 or Matt O’Byrne at 226-2060.
McDonalds 32, Annette’s Chocolates 17
McDonald’s used a 10 point fourth quarter to pull away from Annette’s Chocolates in the day’s first contest. Kalyn Loftus led all scorers for the victors with 10 points followed by teammates Imani Oseso and Giana McDaniel with 8 each. Oseso also pulled down 11 rebounds on the day. Ana Casey led the Annette’s charge with seven points pulling down 11 rebounds as well. Montze Gloria played solid defense by hauling in 11 boards.
Banc Home Loans 17, Custom House 10
Custom House’s defense limited most of Banc Home Loan’s scoring to the first and fourth quarters, but it wasn’t enough to bring home victory. Cameron Wickersham and Madison Hulquist led the BHL scoring attack with nine and six points respectively. Wickersham alaso had 12 rebounds and seven steals to round out her day. Custom House scoring came courtesy of Madison Poljanec, Ashley McDowell and Jasmine Palmas with five, three and two points respectively.

Imani Oseso paced the McDonalds offense with nine points while Giana McDaniel added eight. Oseso pulled in 11 rebounds as well. Carla Magana led Kesler with eight hard earned points. Nena Connell played solid defense with nine rebounds and five steals for Kesler.

Optimist Youth Basketball Opens 2016/17 Signups
The Napa Youth Optimist Basketball league embarks on their 37th year of providing low cost, developmental program that is fun and instructional for all of Napa County’s youth. The OYB program is focused on participation and dedicated to the development of skills and sportsmanship by all who sign up for the program. In 1979, the league started with 40 players on 4 co-ed teams. Last season more than 500 players on 50 plus teams participated. The season runs from mid-November through March, depending on grade level. Today, teams are divided into girls and boys leagues and these leagues are formed by grade level.
Those interested in playing in the upcoming season have several options to sign up. On-line signups are available by visiting the OYB website, www.napaoyb.org. Or, at that same website’s home page, a registration form can be downloaded. Interested parents and players can simply fill out the registration form and mail it with their check, payable to OYB, to the address at the bottom of the form.
There will also be a series of in-person registrations available at the following dates and times. All in-person signups will take place in the main gymnasium of Napa Valley College.
